PARIS, FRANCE / RankWire.AI / – The OECD has upgraded its forecast for worldwide economic growth in 2026 to 2.9%, highlighting the ongoing robustness of the global economy. This adjustment marks an increase from the 2.8% predicted in the June report. Meanwhile, the organization has revised downward its growth outlook for 2027 to 3.0% from 3.1%. Continued investment related to artificial intelligence has played a role in bolstering economic activity and trade flows. Persistent high energy prices and inflationary pressures remain significant challenges for households and businesses across major economies.

Despite performing better than earlier estimates, global growth experienced a slowdown during the first half of 2026. The annualized growth rate declined to 2.6% from 3.6% in the latter half of 2025. Disruptions in energy markets were mitigated by increased oil inventories and heightened production outside the Gulf region. Additional support came from alternative supply routes facilitating fuel flow to international markets. China’s subdued oil demand provided further offsetting effects, as countries adjusted to rising prices and evolving supply conditions.
Technology expenditure continued to serve as a key driver for manufacturing and export sectors. Korea and Japan saw significant increases in semiconductor shipments, while China also reported gains in technology exports. Technological industrial output expanded across much of Asia, with similar investments supporting activity in the United States and parts of Europe. Consumer confidence improved in several advanced economies after May, and unemployment levels remained low in many countries, although higher fuel costs continued to diminish household purchasing power.
US Economy Sets the Pace with Major Growth Forecasts Among Advanced Markets
The United States is projected to grow by 2.2% in 2026 and 2.1% in 2027. Continued investment in artificial intelligence remains a support for business activity, even as slower consumer spending curtails overall expansion. The euro area is expected to see a 1.0% increase in both years. Elevated energy prices and higher interest rates continue to dampen regional demand. Japan is forecasted to expand by 0.8% in 2026, with growth easing to 0.7% in 2027.
China’s economy is anticipated to expand by 4.5% in 2026 and 4.2% in 2027. India’s growth is projected at 7.1% for fiscal year 2026-27 following a 7.8% increase in the previous year. For fiscal year 2027-28, India’s growth is expected to reach 6.5%. Indonesia is forecast to register growth rates of 5.2% in 2026 and 5.1% in 2027. Mexico’s economy is predicted to grow by 1.5% this year and 1.8% next year.
Inflation in G20 Countries Remains Elevated as Energy Prices Climb
Inflation continues to be a prominent concern within the OECD’s outlook. The forecast for headline inflation across G20 economies stands at 4.1% in 2026, up from 3.4% in 2025, with a predicted decline to 3.6% in 2027. Advanced G20 nations are expected to see inflation of 3.2% this year, decreasing to 2.6% in 2027. US inflation is forecast to fall from 3.6% in 2026 to 2.6% in 2027, while inflation in the euro area is projected at 3.0% and 2.9%, respectively.
The OECD attributes the rise in inflation to higher energy prices, which have driven up household expenses and added pressure to inflation figures in many economies. Long-term government bond yields have also increased, reflecting rising borrowing and debt-servicing costs. Mathias Cormann, OECD Secretary-General, commented that global growth has held up better than anticipated but remains weaker than last year. The organization advocates for sustainable public finances and targeted temporary support measures. It also emphasizes the importance of productivity improvements, skills development, diversified energy supplies, and broader adoption of artificial intelligence as critical components of economic policy.
