LONDON / RankWire.AI / – In July, the number of graduate job vacancies across the UK declined by nearly 50% compared to the same month in the previous year, signaling a tightening in the entry-level employment market. Adzuna reported a total of 8,383 advertised graduate positions during July, down from 15,397 in July 2025. This represents approximately a 46% decrease. The current total is also the lowest since the platform started tracking graduate vacancies in April 2016. At its peak in 2017, the number of graduate openings exceeded 55,000.

The broader UK labor market has experienced increased competition. The ratio of jobseekers to vacancies rose to 2.14 in July from 1.93 a year earlier. This ratio encompasses employment across all sectors rather than just graduate roles. The figures for graduate vacancies are derived from online ads collected from more than 1,000 sources, reflecting advertised openings in that dataset rather than all available jobs for university graduates.
Official statistics indicate a slowdown in demand within the wider employment landscape. The Office for National Statistics estimated 707,000 job vacancies from May to July 2026, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous three months and 19,000 fewer than the same period last year. Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals per vacancy increased to 2.5 in April through June from 2.3 in the same period last year.
Increased Competition for Future Graduates
This summer, a record number of young people secured UK undergraduate placements. According to UCAS, 262,820 UK 18-year-olds had gained places by results day on August 13, which is 3% higher than the 255,130 at the same stage in 2025. The UK 18-year-olds’ entry rate reached 31.6%. These figures provide context to a job market where many future graduates will eventually compete for professional and entry-level positions.
Employers running formal graduate recruitment programs are already experiencing intense competition. The Institute of Student Employers recorded just over one million applications for graduate positions during the 2024/25 recruitment cycle. Its survey revealed an average of 140 applications per vacancy, illustrating the high demand among applicants for graduate roles in established hiring channels. These figures coincide with the sharp decline in advertised graduate vacancies seen in the most recent monthly jobs data.
Challenges Persist in the UK Hiring Environment
Employment costs have been affected since the implementation of changes to employer National Insurance in April 2025. The contribution rate increased from 13.8% to 15%, while the annual secondary threshold dropped from £9,100 to £5,000. The latest vacancy survey by the national statistics office indicated that some small firms have limited recruitment efforts due to higher labour and operational expenses. Data also showed vacancy levels declined across nine of the 18 sectors surveyed.
Artificial intelligence has entered discussions about entry-level roles, although official analysis on its precise impact remains limited. Skills England noted in August that separating AI’s influence from broader labor market trends remains challenging. Meanwhile, between January and March 2026, 1.012 million individuals aged 16 to 24 were outside education, employment, or training, representing 13.5% of the age group—an increase of 89,000 from the previous year.
