VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is advancing with BEACONSAT, its first military satellite and the most substantial satellite ever developed within the country. The spacecraft’s mission is to monitor disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit. Austria aims to launch this approximately 32-kilogram satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

The Austrian Defence Ministry regards BEACONSAT as a technology demonstration component of its expanding military space program. Officials have connected this project with Austria’s broader initiatives in satellite navigation, communications, and space-based reconnaissance. In 2023, the ministry adopted a military space strategy outlining development objectives through 2035 and beyond.
European and Austrian technology integrated into satellite
GATE Space is leading the BEACONSAT initiative and provides the propulsion system, structural components, and thermal management technology. The Austrian firm, which spun off from TU Wien in 2022, specializes in spacecraft propulsion. Its propulsion technology has undergone over 8,000 hot-fire tests under atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project also received approximately 750,000 euros in Austrian public funding aimed at technological development.
Additional organizations contribute essential systems for the satellite’s navigation monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology designed to detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides other spacecraft hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency supports the effort via its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space systems in operational environments for technology demonstration missions.
Launch to inaugurate Austria’s first military satellite mission
BEACONSAT’s focus will be on collecting data on interference rather than carrying weapons or executing offensive operations. From orbit, the satellite will monitor signals and detect patterns associated with jamming and spoofing activities. In 2026, project updates indicated the Defence Ministry’s contribution is roughly 1 million euros. After deployment in 2027, the satellite will initially serve as a research and technology demonstration platform.
Austria anticipates that its February 2027 launch will initiate its first military satellite operation. SpaceX will launch BEACONSAT into orbit using a Falcon 9 as part of its scheduled launch plan. Once in orbit, the satellite will gather intelligence on disruptions affecting satellite navigation services and relay data for analysis.
